The phrase “insurance included” does not explain which costs will be covered after an accident. When renting a car, motorcycle or scooter in Pattaya, separate the vehicle’s insurance documents, your liability under the rental agreement and your own travel insurance.
Different types of protection may apply
Compulsory vehicle insurance
This is connected to the registered vehicle and is primarily designed to compensate people injured in road accidents. Its existence does not mean that every type of damage to the rented car or scooter will be paid in full.
Voluntary vehicle insurance
Coverage depends on the individual policy. Risks, limits, excess, authorised drivers and permitted territory may all differ. Ask the partner for the insurer’s name, policy period and key conditions instead of relying on a verbal statement that the vehicle is insured.
Renter liability under the agreement
The rental contract may set a deposit, an excess or full liability for particular events, including lost keys, tyre damage, use outside the approved area, an unauthorised driver, an invalid licence or driving under the influence.
Your personal travel insurance
Travel insurance may cover medical and other costs for the traveller. Many policies impose specific requirements for licence category, International Driving Permit, engine capacity and helmet use. Failing to meet those conditions can affect a claim.
Seven questions to ask before payment
- Which insurance company issued the policy and when does it expire?
- Does it cover damage to the rented vehicle?
- What is the renter’s maximum liability or excess?
- Is injury or property damage to third parties covered?
- Which items are excluded: tyres, glass, underbody, theft, flooding or unpaved roads?
- Who is authorised to drive and can a second driver be added?
- Who should be called and which documents are required after an incident?
Common reasons cover may be limited
- not holding a valid licence for the correct vehicle category;
- letting someone not named in the agreement drive;
- alcohol or drug use;
- riding a motorcycle or scooter without a helmet;
- travelling outside the agreed area;
- reporting an accident late or arranging repairs independently;
- using the vehicle in breach of the rental conditions.
What to do after an accident
- Stop, use hazard lights where available and assess the safety of the location.
- Call 1669 for emergency medical assistance if anyone is injured.
- Contact the rental partner using the number in the agreement.
- Call the police when required; Tourist Police can be reached on 1155.
- Photograph vehicle positions, damage, registration plates and road conditions.
- Do not sign a document you do not understand without translation.
- Do not arrange repairs before approval from the owner or insurer.
Comparing rental offers
Compare more than the daily rate. A low price with a high renter liability may become expensive after a minor incident. Before booking a car, motorcycle or scooter, request the rental agreement and insurance conditions.
